The love for basketball can transcend societal constraints and hidebound tradition. That’s the message behind a short film from Jordan Brand, entitled #RISEABOVE EXPECTATIONS, in which a young woman living in Iraq rises above expectations to become team captain of her college basketball team. Her name is Laylan (pictured below), who describes herself simply as a basketball player. The film is interspersed with statements representing the old guard (a typical line: “Female sports should not be played in front of strangers”), while Laylan and her team can be seen playing in a gym, enjoying the pure love of sport and competition. Check out the video above, and look for three additional documentaries to release during each week in July.

Thanks for posting… what an uplifting story.
